The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Calabar (UNICAL) chapter, has vowed to embark on a strike if the Federal Government fails to address its longstanding demands.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday in Calabar, the branch Chairperson, Dr. Peter Ubi, said that despite several rounds of negotiations, critical issues remain unresolved, which he described as a deliberate attempt by the government to disregard collective bargaining principles.
He further noted that trust in the government has been eroded.
“Our members are already weighed down by loans.
What we demand is simple: let the government sign the renegotiated agreement to improve our purchasing power and reduce our dependence on cooperative loans,” he said.
Dr. Peter Ubi commended the Federal Government for placing a moratorium on the establishment of new universities.
He urged the government to ensure that any future universities are approved only with proper development plans in place.
